GS Yuasa Corporation (Tokyo Stock Exchange: 6674; “GS Yuasa”) today announced that the ting-ting streetcar in Kyoto’s Umekoji Park (location: Shimogyo-ku, Kyoto), which has been installed with GS Yuasa’s lithium-ion battery, has started service on March 8.

GS Yuasa, in endorsing Kyoto City’s intention to revive its municipal streetcar service (which had contributed to the city’s development since the Meiji era) with cutting-edge technology, donated its state-of-the-art lithium-ion battery to the city in April 2013. It also provided the technical support necessary for storage battery control. At the ceremony held for reopening the square and inaugurating the streetcar service, the company received a letter of appreciation from Mayor Kadokawa.

The streetcar, which uses a coach built in the late Meiji era, used to operate within Umekoji Park from 1994 on power drawn from overhead electric lines. It has now been remodeled as a storage-battery-operated train along with the redevelopment and expansion of the park.

While the appearance and interior of the train remains as it was over the years, it is now reborn as a latest storage-battery-operated streetcar running silently on tree-lined tracks with no overhead power lines.

The lithium-ion battery used in this train is an industrial-use storage battery with a total capacity of 33.7 kWh. It can also be used as an emergency power source during disasters.
