GS Yuasa Corporation (Tokyo Stock Exchange: 6674; “GS Yuasa”) announces that it is expanding the production capacity for lead-acid storage batteries for automobiles and motorcycles in Indonesia, which is witnessing continued economic growth. GS Yuasa has three affiliates in the country and it constructed a new plant while bolstering the production capacity at their existing plants by the end of 2015. With this, the company aims to strengthen its supply system to meet the future expansion in demand and enhance competitiveness, as its production capacity for automotive lead-acid storage batteries increases to 9.6 million units from the current 8.9 million and that for motorcycles to 30 million units from the current 27.7 million.

1. PT. GS Battery (Head office: Jakarta, Indonesia; “PTGS”)

PTGS has been producing automotive lead-acid storage batteries near Jakarta, but it is hard to boost the capacity of its existing plant in the region due to reasons including rise of minimum wages. The company, therefore, acquired 30,000 sq. m. of land in Semarang, about 500 km east of central Jakarta, and constructed a new plant for production automotive lead-acid storage batteries investing 150 billion rupiah (about 1.4 billion yen). With the new plant, the production capacity will increase to 5.6 million units by the end of 2015.

Further, PTGS is producing motorcycle lead-acid storage batteries at the Jakarta suburb of Karawang. In the Indonesian motorcycle market, the diversification of the customer tastes and values has led to increasing demand for high value-added products. In order to flexibly respond to such demand, PTGS will invest 35 billion rupiah (0.3 billion yen) to construct a new 8,000 sq. m. plant within the Kawarang plant, which will boost the production capacity to 16 million units by the end of 2015.

2. PT. Trimitra Baterai Prakasa (Head office: Jakarta, Indonesia; “TBP”)

GS Yuasa made TBP a consolidated subsidiary on July 2014. TBP is an important subsidiary engaged in production and export of automotive lead-acid storage batteries and GS Yuasa plans to strengthen TBP’s battery charging ability by investing 2.2 billion rupiah (about 20 million yen). This will boost the production capacity of the subsidiary to 4 million units by the end of 2015.

3. PT. Yuasa Battery Indonesia (Head office: Tangerang, Indonesia; “YBID”)

YBID is engaged in the manufacture of motorcycle lead-acid storage batteries in Tangerang and it will add a new assembly line in the existing plant, investing 15 billion rupiah (about 140 million yen) to meet the increasing demand. With the new line, YBID’s production capacity will rise to 14 million units by the end of 2015.
